What Is a Medicare Special Enrollment Period (SEP)?
A SEP is a window outside standard enrollment periods that allows you to enroll in or change Medicare coverage due to a qualifying life event. Common triggers include: losing employer-sponsored coverage, moving to a new area, qualifying for Medicaid or Extra Help, and plan contract changes. SEP windows vary by trigger — some are 60 days, some are 2 months after the event.
You do not always have to wait for Annual Enrollment (October 15–December 7). If something major changed in your life, you may qualify for a Special Enrollment Period right now. Integrity Health Solutions helps Tampa Bay residents identify whether an SEP applies and what plans are available in their county.

Common SEP triggers for Florida residents
Losing employer or retiree coverage, moving into a new service area, becoming eligible for Medicaid or Extra Help, and certain plan contract changes are among the most common triggers we see in Tampa Bay.
Each trigger has its own clock. Some SEPs start when the event happens; others start when you are notified. Acting quickly protects your options.
- Loss of employer-sponsored coverage
- Permanent move to a new county or state
- Newly dual-eligible (Medicare + Medicaid)
- Extra Help / LIS eligibility changes
- Plan non-renewal or service-area change
SEP vs AEP vs OEP
AEP (Oct 15–Dec 7) is open to most Medicare beneficiaries for Advantage and Part D changes effective January 1. OEP (Jan 1–Mar 31) is limited to people already on Medicare Advantage. SEPs are event-based and can open at any time of year.
What to bring to a free SEP check
Have your Medicare card, a short description of what changed (and when), your medication list, and your doctors. We will tell you whether an SEP appears to apply and compare plans you can actually use in your county.
If you think you have an SEP
- Write down the date the life event happened or the notice arrived
- Do not cancel current coverage until a replacement start date is clear
- Verify doctors and drugs before you switch
